On January 5, Chinese Ambassador to Sudan Ma Xinmin publishes an signature article titled Pursue Development Despite Hardships and Create a New Vision for Win-win Cooperation for the China Focus Column on Sudanese Voice. The full text is as follows:

The year of 2020 is coming to an end. At this joyful moment of ringing out the old year and ringing in the new, I wish to extend my New Year wishes to friends in all sectors in Sudan.

2020 is a turbulent year in the history of the world. As the novel coronavirus is raging across the globe, the world economy remains sluggish. Anachronistic practices of unilateralism and protectionism have been on the rise, driven by resurgent power politics and Cold-War mentality. Human development is confronted with unprecedented risks and challenges in an increasingly fluid and changing world. At the same time, the evolution of the international order is speeding up. A new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is gathering momentum. Humankind as a whole has gained a more profound appreciation of the need for health and safety, peace and development, win-win cooperation and for embracing a shared future. What has happened since the start of COVID-19 has proved time and again that humankind is a community with a shared future, multilateralism is the right way forward, and that strengthened global governance is an urgent necessity.

2020 is an extraordinary year in the history of the People’s Republic of China. Faced with the grim and complicated international situation and the arduous tasks for stable reform and development, compounded with the once-in-a-century COVID-19 pandemic, China has braved unprecedented challenges. It is in times of hardship that bravery and perseverance arise, and only persistent efforts befit the times of hardship. Rising up to challenges and forging ahead with solidarity, China is the first country to effectively bring the epidemic under control, reopen businesses and resume positive economic growth, making itself the only major economy in the world that registers positive economic growth this year. Despite hardships, China has achieved multiple targets according to the schedule. Goals and tasks for the tough battle against poverty in the new era have been accomplished, with approximately 100 million poor population lifted out of poverty. The official signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) has created the world’s biggest free trade zone. This year also witnessed the complete success of Chang’e 5 mission, the successful launch of Tianwen-1 Mars Probe, the official operation of the Beidou-3 system and the rollout of the world’s largest 5G network. A few days ago, China and European Union (EU) reached a comprehensive bilateral investment agreement after seven years of negotiations, presenting a New Year gift to the world. With great deliberation and confidence and being inclusive and open-minded, China has stood the tests and hopes its experience will be a source of confidence and strength for the global fight against COVID-19.

2020 is a fruitful year in the history of China-Sudan relations. China and Sudan have fought shoulder by shoulder, writing a new chapter of pursuing a bright future with solidarity and cooperation. Chinese President Xi Jinping and President of Sudan’s Sovereign Council Burhan exchanged messages. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Prime Minister of Sudan’s transitional government Hamdok stayed in touch through phone calls. Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Sudanese counterpart Asma extended greetings to each other. People from all walks of life in Sudan cheered for Wuhan and for Hubei to express their firm support to the government and people of China. At the critical juncture of the increasingly severe epidemic situation in Sudan, various circles in China donated medial supplies in 13 batches to the Sudanese side. Also, the Chinese government was the first to extend a helping hand by sending its largest medical expert team to Sudan, which gave a strong boost to Sudan’s battle against the novel coronavirus. Solidarity and cooperation between China and Sudan against COVID-19 added new substance to our strategic partnership. Our two nations set a new model for global cooperation against COVID-19 and create a new path to building a global community of health for all. Our joint COVID-19 response will certainly make its mark in the history of China-Sudan relations. Practical cooperation between China and Sudan also made new progress. The implementation agreement for China-aid slaughter house project was officially signed. Wanbao Mining Ltd. and Sudan’s Ministry of Energy and Mining signed a cooperation agreement for exploration and exploitation of mineral resources. CRRC Ziyang Co., Ltd. and Sudan Railways Corporation signed the locomotive procurement contract. And the Chinese Embassy in Sudan built three “China-Sudan friendship schools” and three “China-Sudan friendship multimedia classrooms” in Sudan. Our strategic partnership has been increasingly deepened in our joint COVID-19 response, and China-Sudan traditional friendship will be flourishing through win-win cooperation.

During the year 2020, we witnessed history taking place and made history as well. In the upcoming year 2021, we are resolved to break the waves and make new achievements. Heaven has its own law, and stable and long-term development is only possible if the right path is chosen. In the face of common challenges posed by the changes going on in the world, the globally rampant COVID-19, and non-traditional security threats, we should not stop by headwinds and setbacks. Instead, we need to unite as one and work together to beat the virus, spur economic recovery and safeguard peace. As next year will see the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China, China will embark on the 14th Five-Year Period planning, enter a new phase in fully building itself into a modern socialist country and make new advances in pursuing all-round progress in major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era. China will stand with Sudan on the right side of history, and join hands with Sudan to find opportunities through opening up and tackle intricate issues through cooperation. China will remain committed to achieving win-win results through development, jointly building a community with a shared future for mankind, and collaboratively creating a more prosperous future.

By night and day the mighty stream flows without stop. Let’s move into the New Year with the right path and innovation, and pull together to create a splendid future for China and Sudan and for the world!

Best wishes to China! Best wishes to Sudan! And best wishes to the world!
